Hyundai Sonata vs Elantra: Performance

Hyundai Sonata Engine SpecsNo matter which of these Hyundai sedans you choose, be prepared for an optimal performance that is sure to take your commutes to the next level. However, since they do differ slightly, their performance specs may help in making that final decision.

The 2020 Elantra is powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder inline engine. Generating 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, your drives are backed by strength, making highway or city travels fun and easy.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata, on the other hand, offers two engine options: a standard 191-hp 2.5L 4-cylinder and an available 1.6L turbo 4-cylinder. The latter engine boasts 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, ideal if you’re looking for slightly more robust performance.

Both the Hyundai Sonata and the Hyundai Elantra employ a standard 8-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®. Utilize the SHIFTRONIC® technology to override the automatic shifting of the system and take the wheel with manual shifting.

On top of their engines and transmissions, both Hyundai models come standardly equipped with Drive Mode Select technology to enhance your performance. With the Elantra, you’ll get slightly more customizability with selectable Normal, Sport, and Smart modes.

Sonata vs Elantra: Which Has Better MPG?

Hyundai Elantra Fuel Economy

With either the 2020 Hyundai Sonata or the 2020 Hyundai Elantra on your side, you’re going to find yourself cruising right pass the station to fill up your tank. However, since the configurations differ in these Hyundai sedans, the estimated fuel economy differs, too.

The Sonata comes equipped with a 15.9-gallon fuel tank and presents you with an EPA-estimated efficiency of 28 city/38 highway/32 combined MPG when equipped with the standard 2.5L 4-cylinder engine under the hood.1 This is a great fuel economy for transitioning between city and highway driving, offering a well-balanced combination.

Even with its high-powered engine option under the hood, the Sonata still presents excellent fuel economy standards. With the 1.6L turbo engine, you’ll get up to an EPA-estimated 27 city / 36 highway / 31 combined MPG.1

The Hyundai Elantra offers a slightly elevated efficiency, with EPA estimates coming in at 31 city / 41 highway / 35 combined MPG.2 Additionally, this model has a 14-gallon fuel tank. Depending on where you drive might the deciding factor in this race between Hyundai sedans.
