For over 50 years, House by the Side of the Road has been giving back to the place they call home. This nonprofit organization benefits those who are struggling in Washtenaw County, and helps them with funding for clothing, bedding, and additional household essentials. Most clients are those who have been affected by job loss, house fires, illnesses, and more.


History of House by the Side of the Road

The organization started in 1970, beginning as a partnership between the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners and several local churches. The first ever location opened in Ypsilanti, but it is currently located in Ann Arbor.

House by the Side of the Road is volunteer-run by Washtenaw County locals. From sorting donations to office work and more, the organization is proud to have such dedicated people donating their time to help those in need.

All donations benefit House by the Side of the Road clients. Some of the most common material donations include clothing, linens, and other household items.

If you’re not looking to donate any items, House by the Side of the Road accepts monetary donations too. You can choose between becoming a sustaining donor, which means donating one time a month, sponsoring the House for a month, or by offering a one-time donation in someone’s honor.
