The United Way of Washtenaw County Mission

The mission of United Way of Washtenaw County is to create “a community where your zip code no longer determines your opportunity in life.”  They’re striving to achieve this goal by 2030 using a strategic and multi-faceted plan.

While they hone in on two acute community issues—poverty and inequality—they plan to dismantle these issues so every member of the community has the opportunity to rise into the middle class and beyond. In addition to evening the opportunities in the community, United Way of Washtenaw County also strives to increase the quality of life throughout the community.

How They’re Funding Change in the Community

Community HelpBy connecting the community and creating a system of financial and emotional support, they’re able to assist those in need throughout the community and level the playing field. One way they do that is through discretionary funding which is funneled into several programs:

  • The Basic Needs Fund provides community members with basic necessities.
  • The Financial Stability Fund helps to increase financial capability in low-income individuals by providing financing assistance to the appropriate agency programs.
  • The Opportunity Fund focuses on present and emergent community needs through projects.
  • The Strategic Planning Fund finances the planning efforts for future human service projects and organizations.

Their offerings don’t stop there, though. They also work hands-on with volunteers and community members to restore buildings and public areas. Additionally, they offer program operations grants and capacity building grants to further support restoration and betterment projects.
