Hyundai Sonata vs Elantra: Performance
No matter which Hyundai sedan you choose, be prepared for an optimal performance that is sure to take your commutes to the next level. However, since they do differ slightly, their performance specs may help in making that final decision.
The 2021 Elantra is powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder inline engine, which generates 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque; your drives are backed by strength, making highway or city travels fun and easy. For those who seek more power, the Elantra also offers a larger powertrain that will afford you 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata, on the other hand, offers three engine options: a standard 191-horsepower 2.5L 4-cylinder and an available 1.6L turbo 4-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower are the most common. However, the Sonata also offers a 2.5L turbo 4-cylinder engine that offers a more robust performance, coming ready to pump out 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque.
You’ll also find a difference when it comes to these sedans’ transmissions. The Elantra comes stocked with a SmartstreamÒ Intelligent Variable Transmission, while the Sonata comes with an 8-speed automatic. Both are automatic transmissions, but the Intelligent Variable Transmission works to continually optimize your gear ratios rather than using set ones the way a regular automatic would.
On top of their engines and transmissions, both Hyundai models come standardly equipped with Drive Mode Select technology to enhance your performance. In exploring the Elantra, you’ll get slightly more customizability with selectable Normal, Sport, and Smart modes.
Sonata vs Elantra: Which Has Better MPG?
With either the 2021 Hyundai Sonata or the 2021 Hyundai Elantra on your side, you’re going to find yourself cruising right past the gas station instead of stopping in to fill up your tank. However, since the configurations differ in these Hyundai sedans, the estimated fuel economy differs, too.
The Sonata comes equipped with a 14.8-gallon fuel tank and presents you with an EPA-estimated efficiency of 28 city/38 highway MPG when equipped with the standard 2.5L 4-cylinder engine under the hood. This is a great fuel economy for transitioning between city and highway driving, offering a well-balanced combination.1
Even with its high-powered engine option under the hood, the Sonata still presents excellent fuel economy standards. The larger Sonata engine will still earn up to an EPA-estimated 27 city/37 highway MPG.1
The Hyundai Elantra offers slightly elevated efficiency, with EPA estimates coming in at 33 city/43 highway MPG.2 Additionally, this model has a 12.4-gallon fuel tank. Depending on where you drive might be the deciding factor in this race between Hyundai sedans.
