Rich In American History
New Hudson Inn has historical roots dating all the way back to 1830, before Michigan even obtained official statehood. Founder Russell Alvord sought out a grant of land from President Andrew Jackson in the Northwest Territory. He obtained a deed for a 40-acre parcel of land where he built the “Old Tavern” in 1831. It was here that travelers and businessmen would stop while passing through and served as a bar and changing point.
The tavern became a stop for travelers throughout the years to come. During the Civil War era, it is believed that the upstairs floor hid runaway slaves and was a main stop for the Underground Railroad. This room has been preserved and you can view this area today.
The tavern went through many iterations and name changes throughout its 185 years of business, and today, it is now known as the New Hudson Inn.
What To Eat
The New Hudson Inn is not only proud of its long history, but also of its delicious drink and food options as well! Here’s a sneak peek at the menu with some of our top picks:
• White Trash Nachos: Don’t let the name deter you. Try this twist on nachos served instead with homemade potato chips topped with smoked pork, bacon, cheddar, scallions, honey jack, black olives, and sour cream.
• Spicy Jalapeno Burger: Spice up your burger with this Cajun-spiced patty topped with grilled jalapenos, onions, and pepper jack cheese.
• Smoked Corned Beef Reuben: Served on grilled rye bread and comes with smoked corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing. Yum!
In the mood for breakfast? They’ve got that, too! Stop by on Saturday or Sunday before 12:00 pm, where you can choose from a full menu full of breakfast options, including pancakes, omelets, and free fresh-made donuts for every table.
